Final Blog Post
I quite enjoyed this coursework, a lot more than I thought I would. Even though I'm still not taken to the idea of being in my music video and being the face of the main products, it was a good and fun experience. Thank you to all the teachers who helped out during this coursework (especially Rebecca and Mary) and I would like to thank Micky and Trevor also. I happy this is over, so I get to relax a little bit and No more Blogging!!
Final review post
In comparison to my AS blog I have done a lot more work and in a lot more detail. I was more laid back in AS and that meant I missed out a lot of blogs and it wasn't to a good standard and not all that I had to do was on the blog. This year I took on a new attitude towards my work as I saw the error in my ways. One thing I have done well is used more and a wider range of technology as I didn't know much in AS about good sites to use to present my work and how to properly use technology. My research, planning and production blogs are quite detailed. There are a few gaps in my work but i think I have the most important blogs that I need up and in terms of individual blogs, i have a few not too many but that's just down to me and my POOR time management. If I had another chance to do this, I'd spend a little more time blogging and plan my time better so that my blogs were better and also more detailed planning and I'd take more advantage at the research stage.

Evaluation Question 3
How did you use media technologies in the construction and the research, planning and evaluation stages?
Music Video
Research
At this stage the main sites that I used were Youtube,
Vimeo, Google. I used the Google search engine to gain greater understanding
and more information about the theories than what I learnt in class. Youtube
was use to look at videos which linked to the theories and to gain ideas from
existing music videos to use in my own. I also used Vimeo to look at previous
student work in the same way.
Planning
Animatic: The animatic was a good way to structure the music video so we'd know which type of shots would be used at a certain point of the song and also the mise en scene and camerawork. We didn't use actual images for the animatic but hand drawn images (courtesy of Anthony).Planning
Digital Storyboard (Quark): We used images to create a storyboard with details of the types of shots, location and camerawork.
Construction
Camera (+ memory cards): We had the opportunity of working with professional, state of the art JVC camera's provided by the media department. This piece of technology was very important in the construction of our music video as if we did not have them we wouldn't have been able to make our music video. We used them to film our footage for our music video at the Barbican. At first, most of our footage were normal shots and cutaways instead of base tracks but after we realised we shot quite a few base tracks. All of this footage saved onto the memory cards and later transferred and saved onto our hard drives.
Sony still camera and Flip Cam: These 2 technologies were used mainly for behind the scenes to provide visual evidence of our filming sessions and how they went and what we actually did on the days we went out to film.
Final cut pro: We used Final Cut pro during the editing process of the music video. The footage that we shot using the cameras was transferred onto final cut and we went through and chose the shots we wanted and that looked the best. We had base tracks as well as cutaways and they were both used to create a sequence and cut accordingly to add structure to the music video and put the right shots in the right place. When placed onto the sequence they were layered in the style of base track editing. We also used final cut for colour correction to bring out our make up and jewellery and we added slow motion to some sections of our music video.
Ancillary products
Research
Google search engine: This is the main way I researched digipaks and advertisements to gain ideas for my own and to be analytic of others.
Planning: Looking at pre-existing digipaks by previous media students through the blog and looking at actual digipaks by searching on google images to look at typical pop digipaks and advertisements so that I can use that in the construction of my own.. Also using external websites like dafont.com to try and find a font for my digipak. We also did a photo shop exercise in class recreating a digipak for photoshop practice and to be familiar with the conventions and the do's and don'ts of digipak and advertisements.
Construction
Canon: We used a professional canon camera to take pictures for our digipak and advertisement.
Photoshop:For my digipak I used a template to create a four panel digipak. I added the colour I wanted for my background (black) and then my font (fonts from photoshop). All the images that I used I didn't add any effects as I thought I didn't need to add any. The cd was created using the shape took and adjusted the opacity so that the image on the back would be visible and the hole in the cd was created (with the help of Trevor) cut out tool in photoshop.
Blogger (research, planning and evaluation)
Blogger was a good way for us to keep track of our work, for the teachers too and also a way to present my work in a more creative way. Using blogger I was able to create detailed posts on research, planning and evaluation, not only written posts but using external sites like: prezi (powerpoint), animoto, slide.ly and gifs (to present images rather than just posting them) go animate (animation). Also added video's filmed using the flip cam, especially at evaluation stages when we're getting feedback from others.

Social Networking (Twitter & Instagram)
We used twitter so that our teachers can keep track of us while filming and also as a way to engage with possible fans/ to gain fans by talking about what the Candi hearts are doing and getting into character of being a girl band. We also used instagram to put up pictures of our prodction
Evaluation Question 4
We have received quite a bit of feedback from our peers, teachers and target audience members throughout the process planning, production and final products. It really helped to get the opinions of others to see what worked well, what didn't and what could be further developed/improved.
The reaction to my music video at the cinema wasn't what I expected. The response was very good, there were a lot of cheering (which got weirdly louder when I was on screen) and clapping to the beat of the song so from that it seemed like people enjoyed the music video - even though I found it quite embarrassing)- but I was happy with the response. After the screening of all the music video's I asked a few people what they thought of my video

What would I change after hearing what people thought?
One of the things that I picked up which was quite interesting was a comment on our performance. we need to be more confident with our performance. I understand where this person was coming from with this comment and it did seem like we weren't as comfortable and confident with what we were doing so I think this is one thing I would change. I think if we got more comfortable with the performance aspect it'll look more realistic and not amateur.
Digipak and Advertisement Feedback
Digipak and Advertisement Feedback
What have I learned from this feedback?
The one comment that they both made as a way to improve my work is the image on the inside of the digipak, as it covers both panels the cd covers my face and it takes away the group aspect as you can't see me. It is something I wouldn't have noticed myself and it's definitely something I would change so that all members of the group are visible as that is really important.
PROGRESS REVIEW: End of Project
Looking back at my blog this year, I realise that I have had to put a lot more detail into my posts than in the AS year. I added a lot more technology to my blog than last year, and I think this adds depth to my research and planning and makes the blog more interesting.
I think that I could have had an even better blog, as I know that leaving things to the last minute and not blogging constantly throughout the project lowered the quality of my posts. However, I believe that my blog contains quite a lot of useful information which shows the steps I have taken to reach the final stages of my production work.
My blog could have been better if I had accounted for my research in even more detail, and the planning posts are probably not as complete as they could have been. If I could do it again, I would try to keep up to date with everything I do as I do it and not try to remember it when I finally decide to blog about it.

Evaluation question 4
What have you learned from your audience feedback?
I decided to do a camtasia showing the feedback for our rough cut, final video and my ancillary work. The main thing I have learned is to not be so judgemental over my products, as the camtasa will show below. I wanted to be a little creative with this question.
Evaluation question 3
How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
I have used technology in many different ways for media, for example whilst planning our video we created an Animatic storyboard. Below is the creation. We used this to structure our video, although we did change a few things during filming. We also used prezi to create a pitch presentation. You can view this in the blog post for it from last year.
Below are embedded powerpoints and prezis I created to show how I used technology.
EVALUATION: Question 4
Question 4:
What have you learned from your audience feedback?
Glogster explaining how audience feedback helped me make my products better:
(Full screen works best)
She mentioned a few things that were missing, which I hadn't added yet as these were not the finished products. However, what she said about the iTunes and HMV signs really helped, as I decided to change those elements.
She also said that I should make the red font brighter on the advertisement. However, I did not change it because it only looked dark on our phones, as the image was very small. On the computers and in print, the red font was much more clear and there was no need to change it.
What have you learned from your audience feedback?
Glogster explaining how audience feedback helped me make my products better:
(Full screen works best)
This video shows the reaction of our media class and teachers after watching our rough cut:
Audience feedback after the cinema screening:
Strengths: costumes, dancing, locations, song, cutting to the beat
Strengths: lighting, costumes, cut to the beat, performers looked energetic
Strengths: editing organised, costumes, walking at the start showed we were a group
Strengths: movement, locations, camera shots, variety
Cinema reactions
-
The reaction to our video being shown in the cinema was good, our peers
seemed excited by our video and they seemed to enjoy it - they even had
a few positive reactions during the video, which I was really happy
about. This video shows how the cinema audience (where everyone was part of our target audience) reacted to our video:
- After the screening, I asked a few people to give me some feedback -
most of the comments I got included the fact that the editing was good
and they liked that it was in time with the beat; they all mentioned the
costumes worn by the performers, in the black and white theme. Our
location also seemed to be successful, and it did not take the attention
from the performers, but still looked good.
- People also liked the way we synchronized our movements to the music
and with each other, and the shot of us walking at the start of the
video was also appreciated, as it showed that we were a group.
Ancillary Work
Mary - Teacher feedback on ancillary products
The feedback I got from my teacher Mary on my ancillary work was very good. She liked the graphics I used on the front cover and the fonts, and the fact that I used them in all of the products.
I included all the needed information and my performers are in the spotlight on the cover. I also followed the conventions and made the album name smaller than the artist name.
One thing that Mary noticed was that everything on the advertisement was written in capital letters - this is because the font I used, Trajan Pro, had only capital letters - using the caps lock would only change the letters by making them a little bit bigger - like the difference in the name 'CandiHearts', where the C and the H are in caps lock with this font.
I have had some feedback on my ancillary work as I was getting close to finishing the digipak and advertisement. I asked my friend to give me her opinion on the social media app Whatsapp, and this helped me make some improvements:
She mentioned a few things that were missing, which I hadn't added yet as these were not the finished products. However, what she said about the iTunes and HMV signs really helped, as I decided to change those elements.
She also said that I should make the red font brighter on the advertisement. However, I did not change it because it only looked dark on our phones, as the image was very small. On the computers and in print, the red font was much more clear and there was no need to change it.
After I finished my ancillary work, I asked the same person to give me feedback on it.
I was very pleased with this feedback - I was sure that the costumes were very important to link this print work to my music video, as all the audience feedback I got before mentioned the use of our black and white costumes.

Evaluation Question 2
How effective is the combination of your main products (video) and ancillary texts (digipak and advertisement)?
The plans for synergy included: monochrome theme, gold rings, bright lipstick and one of our costumes incorporated into the digipak. Although we did not use one of our costumes because we changed some of our ideas regarding the video and it resulted in us only having one costume so we wanted to have a different costume for the digipak. The aspects of the video that link with my ancillary work are the jewellery, red lipstick and monochrome costumes. The moncochrome costumes and red lipstick are evident but the jewellry not as much as there was an emphasis on the gold jewellery which is not clearly evident in the images used even though we did use them, plus some colourful jewellry, which may have stood out more.
How can your audience recognise them as linked products?

How can your audience recognise them as linked products?
What will be most recognised as a link in my products is the black and white theme (monochrome) which has been used throughout, in the music video (costumes), digipak and advertisement. In the music video colour correction was used to bring out the jewellery and the make up and they are also evident in my digipak and advertisement - red lipstick and gold and coloured jewellry. The coloured jewellery was added when doing the photo shoot, it is not an aspect of synergy but it was used to add colour and be a signifier of the pop genre that The Candi Hearts belong to. They stand out more than the gold jewellry in the images I used on my advertisement and digipak so the gold jewellery may not be as clearly linked to the video. My advertisement and digipak are very clearly linked as the same colour scheme, fonts and images were used in each product.
distinct colour scheme, same image used and same fonts used.
colour correction
How successful do you think your main and ancillary texts are?
I think my music video and ancillary products are successful as I have gained a good response from my audience and I think I've done a good job in making a music video, digipak and advertisement which look quite professional. Although I do favour my ancillary products over the music video because I had more control over the design ideas and how I will do things. I think my target audience will be attracted to my music video and ancillary work as it's not very conventional to the pop genre and that will make it stand out more and may act as a unique selling point and I also think it has a distinct colour scheme which works well and will be easily recognisable .
Comparison with existing products
These two digipak & advertisements are quite similar to mine.

Evaluation - Q4
4) What have you learned from your audience feedback?
I believe our music video received positive reception during it's screening @ the independent cinema Screen on the Green; people were clapping along to the beat of the song, Dionne was being cheered every-time she appeared on screen and to top it all off, an applause at the end of the video. It felt great considering how much we worked on it - we were constantly making changes according to feedback from our peers and teachers - constructive criticism you might say. From our rough-cut screening, the whole class agreed that some shots needed to be replaced due to poor lighting and so. This made panic slightly as I thought our entire video would be too dark in the cinema. Because of this, we amended this with use of 3 way colour-correct, brightening up the dark shady shots. Peers who had watched our rough cut saw the change in colour saturation and agreed it made for a fresh video. We also used slow-motion to add a technical aspect with our work. It was originally difficult to place as we didn't want to conflict with the existing shots we had edited to the beat. But the nonetheless, the feedback from the audience @ the screening was great. The only real criticism was in regards to adding filters; We deliberately left this out of our video as it might've made our work look artificial - I was especially reluctant about using this after my film-opening at AS; it looked cosmetic due to excessive transitions, filters and effects used. Ultimately, I don't think of our music video any differently than I did after the screening because I think with each member contributing their respected inputs and ideas, we would only go through with something if each of us were satisfied - there was no clouded-judgement unlike my ancillary work…
Rather than showing you all the feedback videos full of waffling and nonsense, I've made a short compilation to give you insight as to what the audience liked most (P.S. I was the cameraman). But if by any chance you want to check out the videos, be sure to check out my Final Cut - Feedback blog I posted a while ago.
During my initial production, I thought I'd ask friends and family what they thought of two ancillary pieces (advertisement & front-panel) through WhatsApp, the instant messaging app. I chose to seek feedback from them as appose to peers from media as I wanted views mirroring that of a consumer. And luckily enough, I found a few negatives in regards to both pieces. Some thought the main picture in the outside-panel had poor lighting which made Larah, Anca & Dionne look 'uninspiring & emotionless'. Though you could argue that performers on generic pop-albums have a blank facial expression, I think this goes beyond challenging the convention and questions whether it's really a pop album. However, I think it was a bit late to re-shoot pictures as my ancillary product took a lot of our class-time.
From my feedback, I read that cracking a smile was important as positive facial-expressions triggers a 'subconscious reaction' - this would be more likely attract someone who'd be happy to listen to it rather than your average customer - However, I thought this is an important feature to have as a pop group, especially as we're aiming for a younger demographic of teenagers and young adults. Someone else believed that the limited colour choice (black/white/red) rendered my work a bit gothic. I was initially worried about this comment as I thought it would make the genre of our album unclear, however, we were deliberately challenging the use of colour in pop music. Furthermore, my record publication (Island Records) ident and track-listing enforces that this album's spawned from the pop-genre; after all, you wouldn't see the Sugababes release an album under heavy-metal label 'Roadrunner' or contain tracks such as 'Pulse of the Maggots' or 'Danger - Keep Out'.
My advertisement received mixed reactions: some thought it looked professional whereas others thought the alignment of the text and album looked weird. Someone also questioned the necessity of having a small picture of the album in the ad - I had gathered this idea from the advertisement for Marina & The Diamond's 'Shampain'. Because of this, I thought I'd make another advertisement (this time horizontal), making note of these concerns. In my new advertisement, the main picture used was the one from the album (pulled from Jessie J & Ellie Goulding) with the text aligned in the middle of the poster.
Overall, I feel like I 'thrown' off my moral high horse; for what I thought was a masterpiece, was actually flawed. But in overview, it made to look at my work differently and change certain aspects, e.g. I made the new advertisement which I liked more than my previous one. I also added a sticker to my out-side panel to cover up some of the picture's space, but I think makes it made the album look professional. With that said I can honestly say I've learned to be more judgemental of my work and take criticism as a positive as it ultimately leads to a better product. I go into greater detail in this video in which I cover the importance of constructive criticism and changes in consumer trends.
I also made a Feedback Reaction Slide on Slidely. Originally for this question, I reached out to my friends for their views on my ancillary work shown above. And with this presentation, I comment on the feedback given to me by friends. Though I make note of it the paragraphs above, some of the feedback I thought could have been better justified whereas I should state - in greater detail - what went wrong and how I could amend this - enjoy!

EVALUATION: Question 3
Question 3:
How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
RESEARCH
In the research stages, I used a few different websites to find useful information about music videos, such as YouTube, Vimeo, Soundcloud, artists' web pages and their social media profiles (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram).
YouTube was very useful as I could find a lot of examples of music videos which could inspire me and help me make a decision about what genre of music I'd like to make a video with.
After my group decided to do a girl group music video, we looked at as many videos of this genre as we could in order to get ideas for what we could do. However, we decided not to create our own music video for a song that already has a video, as that existing video could have influenced our ideas too much and we could have ended up with a copy of what was already produced.
We decided to choose a song by the Sugababes and we found that 'It Ain't Easy' was a good choice, as it had a nice beat and its lyrics allowed for our own interpretation.
Watching videos on YouTube and Vimeo helped us understand our genre better and see what kinds of costumes and camera shots are conventionally used in music videos of girl groups.
I also used the web to do research into Carol Vernallis, Laura Mulvey and Andrew Goodwin's theories, about which I found information on different websites and put it together in presentations, which I then put on Blogger.
I presented my research in various ways. I used Prezi, PowerPoint (which I uploaded through SlideShare), slideshows using Flickr, Animoto, and I made gifs which showed different pictures or short parts of videos.
I also discovered a Blogger app on the App Store on my iPhone, which I found very helpful for some of my posts, although it has fewer features than using Blogger on a computer.
I also used many of these for the research I've done for my ancillary work - after doing Google Image searches for existing digipaks, album covers and advertisements by girl groups.
I used the Wordle app to present lists of keywords or concepts in a more interesting way, instead of just listing them in a text post.
PLANNING:
MUSIC VIDEO PLANNING:
We prepared a pitch to present to our teachers, where we included all the aspects of planning, from costumes to risk assessments - we presented this with a Prezi:
During our Pitch we also showed our animatic (made by Anthony, a member of my group), made from hand-drawn pictures put in a slideshow with the song in the background:
ANCILLARY PLANNING
I looked through the fonts that were already installed on the Macs and found one that I could use for the artist name and other parts of the text on my ancillary work (Trajan Pro).
However, I did not like any of the others to use together with the one I had already chosen. Therefore, I decided to find one online, and I looked around the website dafont.
I found a nice font called 'Today People' which I thought looked really good and, most importantly, it looked good next to my other font.

PRODUCTION
Use of Technology in the production for the Music Video
Use of Technology in the production of the Ancillary Work
I used Photoshop Elements and Photoshop CS5 (at home) for the production of my ancillary work (digipak and advertisement).
Using Photoshop was my favourite part of the whole project, as I had some previous experience and found it quite easy to use, but still learned some useful new things about the various tools I could use to make an interesting ancillary project.
I decided to use three individual photos of the performers on the front cover of my Digipak. This meant that I had to do more work in order to make all the three pictures match in terms of size, colours and style.
There were times when I found that I did not know exactly how to use a certain tool in Photoshop, so I searched for tutorials online and found a few very useful ones:
Camtasia showing how I cut the pictures from the green screen background and used the Refine Edge feature in Photoshop to remove the green edges as much as possible:
After effectively using all the technology, the group managed to create this final music video:
Here are my final ancillary products which I created after finishing the music video, after extensive research and using Photoshop:

Evaluation - Q3
3) How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
Though I uploaded the question for this on Slideshare, I could only upload it as a PDF so it converted into a lower quality, HOWEVER, you CAN access my powerpoint where you'll find it in greater quality through this link - https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1qQFni1Q1VM_RKX1NV3Uh5qsowZwWIdMi-77_VrkC69E/edit?usp=sharing
I have uploaded three videos to this powerpoint, the embedding will work if you double-click on it, if for some reason the embedding doesn't work I have embedded the videos here.
The sticker tutorial I made via Photoshop. For those unaware what I mean by a sticker, it's the small box located on the front-panel giving the consumer and idea of either how good the album (reviews typically stylised by stars or numbers) or if it contains bonus tracks.
The construction I made for my back-panel on Quarkxpress
The animatic-storyboard I made for the planning of our music video through iMovie at home.

2) How effective is the combination of your main product (video) and ancillary texts (digipak and advertisements)
I answered this question through Prezi in which I talk about the synergy I used to incorporate between both my music video and ancillary work. NOTE: I tried incorporating the GIF in the Prezi, it was used to represent the connection between colour and identity.
Evaluation - Q1
1) In what ways does your media products use develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
I think our video is just used to make the song attractive, almost like Andrew Goodwin's theory of disjunction. Rather than conforming to generic pop-videos of this nature, I wanted to challenge Goodiwin's disjunction and portray his theory of amplification instead (as seen in Sugababe's 'Push The Button'); this is where the video doesn't necessarily follow the narrative displayed in the lyrics, but adds layers on top of it ("I get so used to being alone / My choice this time I'm in the zone").
GIF from Sugababes' 'Push The Button' This video conveys Goodiwn's amplification |
Example of the male-gaze being enforced; both in rap music (Kendrick Lamar) and pop (Nicki Minaj). Notice how the women in Nicki Minaj's video are standing tall as oppose to the one in Kendrick's |
A deconstruction of my digipak, I compare it with Sugababes' 'Change' |
To recap on Vernallis, she argues edits in music videos are a lot more frequent that in film. We conformed with her main theory that editing follows a rhythmic basis closely to the song. Just like your generic pop videos, ours included:
- A lot of jump cuts
- Editing to the beat (in our case however, ultimately the chorus)
- Speeding our edit down and included slow motion to fit in with the beat
I looked closely at Sugababes' 'Ugly' for comparisons in Vernallis' theory. I composed this short video on iMovie, ', editing both videos one-by-one - enjoy!

Evaluation question 2
How effective is the combination of your main product (video) and ancillary texts (digipak and advertisement)?
Our music video makes a clear visual link between it and my ancillary products. Whilst I was planning a while back I planned to use the gold jewellery we had on in the video, the monochrome colour scheme outfits and the red lip gloss as synergy. For the video we had on gold rings, which are shown below. We also had these on for the album cover. The bright red lip gloss we had on in the video we had on again for the digipak and advertisement. You can see the link between the red lips and the red hearts as well. We used the monochrome colour scheme with the outfits in all the products which went with the setting and locations well. We had quite a dull setting with the video which I wanted to link with my ancillary products, so I went with a dark black curtain background as it contrasts with the bright red hearts and the grey text.
This is an example of the lip colours we were looking at before finally settling on the red.
I think my promotional package incorporates the synergy well as we had on extra gold accessories which will make it easier to spot the links between the ancillary work and the video. The red lips are also easy to identify. I think our target audience will recognise the synergy as linked products and I think our target audience will be attracted to my work due to the use of synergy and the design. The colour red is a massive part of the synergy as it's obvious with our make up and the hearts on the ancillary work and I think that's how our audience will recognise that. The pictures below show the similarities between the costumes and ancillary work. The monochrome costume design is something that I feel our target audience will recognise.

The same black and white colour scheme for the costumes is used on my digipak and advertisement. I also used the colour scheme for the layout so it all links together.
I got the red lips from little mix. In their video wings, which I have put together in a gif below, shows the different shades of purple on their lips. They also had colourful make up on when they posed for their digipak as well which I feel is their synergy. It really influenced me.
