Evaluation question 1

In what ways does your media products use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

DIGIPAK AND ADVERTISEMENT

The conventions of a digipak and advertisement are:

  • To rebrand the artist
  • Follow the rule of thirds
  • Good, clear pictures
  • Maximum of three fonts
  • Maximum of three colours
  • Make sure fonts go with style and genre
Below are images of my ancillary work.

I would say my ancillary work meets and uses these conventions, except for the maximum of three colours. I decided to challenge the convention of using only three colours as I thought the shades of colours I had chosen all went well together. I have two different shades of greys on my digipak which I feel link well together along with the black and dark red. On the inside panel I used a gradient for the background so it changes from black to white. I felt this too went with the style along with the white and silver flowers around the picture of the group. Even though I used more than three colours I used them appropriately on my products. For the genre of our video, dark colours are usually used for ancillary work. Below is an annotated image of the Sugababes album cover I used from my other blog post which. This shows a group of the same genre as us using dark colours further proving my point.

I decided to use some work I posted in my previous blog posts to show advertisements and digipaks that have influenced my style. These digipaks and advertisements meet the conventions.

MUSIC VIDEO

Conventions of music videos relating to vernallis and goodwin.

Carol Vernallis
Carol Vernallis explains how music videos have ranged from simple tableaux of a band playing its instruments to multimillion dollar, high-concept extravaganzas. Born of a sudden expansion in new broadcast channels, music videos continue to exert an enormous influence on popular music. They help to create an artist's identity, to affect a song's mood, to determine chart success: the music video has changed our idea of the popular song. She studies the camerawork and editing in music videos.

Carol observed that:
-the camera should move in time with the music
-jump cuts are used very often in music videos
- edits may be very obvious
-a base track is often used
-the usual rules of continuity editing are broken in order to catch the audience attention.

Our video follows these conventions, particularly with the edits as we had slow motion in our video. The camera moved in time with the music and we used jump cuts at the beginning of the third verse. We had obvious edits with the slow motion towards the end and base tracks are used. We also broke the rules of continuity to catch the audiences attention.

Andrew Goodwin
I decided to use a couple of presentations I created for  blog posts I did a while back which explains his theory.

Which videos influenced me?

Sugababes Round Round

Camera work

In the Sugarbabes video there are:
  • Medium shots
  • Wide shots
  • High angle shots
  • Long shots
  • Close ups
  • Panning

The gif I created below shows this. This video really helped us get an idea of what our camera work and angles should be like. Minus the high angle shots we used all of these shots in our video to make it look good and professional.

Mise-en-scene

The mise-en-scene for this video was quite dark, which we liked. The Sugababes also have no costume changes which was something we incorporated in our video. they also have gold jewellery on in the video which we also used for our synergy. The Sugababes also had on short, skimpy outfits, as did we only less risky.

Mise en scene

I really liked the use of mise-en-scene in this video. I linked how the group were all wearing similar clothing, which influenced us as we al had similar items of clothing on. I also think the use of lighting is great in this video as with the sugababes video. We decided to challenge this, however, and just go with natural light as we felt it looked better for our video when we watched it back. The gif I created below shows the saturdays in their video.
