PLANNING: Analysis of 3 Music Videos That Have Influenced Our Decisions

As we were planning our music video and trying to decide on different aspects of our filming, we looked at a lot of music videos trying to get some inspiration and observe the conventions of these videos in order to either follow them or challenge them with our project.
The following videos contained features that we found interesting:

Jessie J - Wild

The fact that the video is all black & white is very interesting, as the focus is moved not on the backgrounds and colours around the performer, but on Jessie J herself. The mise-en-scene is also very simple and it does not take the attention off the performer:

Jessie's accessories are very important and they make her image complete - her costume and her make-up are very simple, the focus is on her performance.

The editing in this video is done on the beat and the camera moves all the time, with the music, which gives a very dynamic feel to the video.

Sugababes - About You Now

What I liked in this video was the girl's costumes - they all had the same colour on them - yellow.
This looked very good in group shots and the strong colour combined well with the simple mise-en-scene, it helped the performers be in the spotlight, even if they were shot from far away.

The Saturdays - My Heart Takes Over

This video is structured very typically for a girl group video - there is one group base track shot and several different shots of each performer - either close-ups or long shots where their costume is shown. All of the girls are wearing clothes in the same style, and they are colour coordinated - soft pink and black are the main colours that appear in their costumes.
It is a slower song, so the camera is moving less than in other, more up-beat songs - however, it is not static, but the movements are a bit more subtle.
