Research: Analysis of Costumes, Settings and Props in music videos

Eliza Doolitlle: Big when I was little

Costumes

There are three costume changes throughout this song and they are, according to Eliza '90's inspired outfits'. The costumes are colourful, which links with the genre pop/indie pop. Her clothes aren't too revealing until she strips to her bra and dives into the pool, which shows her conforming with Mulveys ideology. Elizas legs are on show in the video as well to dry and draw some more attention on her. Bright and colourful clothing is usually associated with pop music as it is supposed to be uplifting, fun and enjoyable. The gifs I made below show other pop icons dressed in colourful outfits.

Setting and Location
The locations for 'Big when I was little' are in house, on the streets, cd room and sports area with a swimming pool. When it comes to bridge/last chorus of the song the time of day changes from being day time to night time and this is something common in music videos as the bridge usually signifies something big is about to happen in the videos. The streets are bright and have colourful graffiti on the walls, which ties in with the colourful costumes. Another example of colourful locations can be found in the storyboard image of the band 'stooshe' below. You can also see their costumes: they are dressed suiting Mulveys theory and the costumes are bright and colourful.

The storyboard image of Eliza shows the location of shots, including the swimming pool at night and sofa in the house. Mid shots, long shots, wide shots, two shots and close up are used here.

Props

There are many props in this video, including a dog, glasses, and a hat. The glasses and hat went with the clothing, but the dog was seen more as an extra accessory. Hats are typical in pop videos, the gifs towards that beginning of the post show this. The picture below show some of the props in Elizas video.
