EXTRA Research: Contradicting Laura Mulveys ideology

"In a world ordered by sexual imbalance, pleasure in looking has been split between active/male and passive/female. The determining male gaze projects its fantasy onto the female figure which is styled accordingly".- Laura Mulvey

Not every music video is like this statement. There are some artists who keep it purely about their music. The video is by Emeli Sande. She, unlike many female artists such as Rihanna and Lady Gaga, isn't dressed provocatively or in skimpy outfits and is in fact wearing quite a bit of clothing. She isn't dancing around or trying to be sexy like other female singers and is doing the complete opposite to what Laura Mulvey is suggesting. She isn't doing anything to act for the 'Male Gaze'. Emeli is not dismembered in this video at all.

Another singer who contradicts this statement is Adele. Adele NEVER dances around or dresses provocatively for the 'male gaze'. The video below shows Adele walking along dressed in a coat and not showing any flesh other than her face. Throughout the whole video she is covered. There are no other people in the video, which means no male dancers dressed provocatively either. The attention isn't on her costume and you forced to listen to and appreciate her as a person.
Adele Someone like you

Lauryn Hill is another female singer who does not dress provocatively for men and or conform to the 'MALE GAZE' theory by Mulvey. Lauryn Hills music is more rap, hip-hop and r and b, so she mainly keeps covered. There are close ups of her face but not of her body. She is the dominant and central person in this video.

So it seems not all artists and females go with what Laura is saying.
